As more advanced aircraft continue to fill our skies, the need for expert Aviation Mechanics will rise. Everything with wings—from a 737, to a corporate helicopter, to an unpiloted research drone—requires constant maintenance. You’ll work under pressure on sophisticated machinery, making sure anything that takes off also lands safely. Specialized training can lead to a career as an airframe mechanic, powerplant technician, instrument repairman, or avionics technician. Also, you could work weekends, nights and holidays. It’s a lot of responsibility, but millions of people will have you to thank when they arrive safely wherever they choose to travel.

Make the world a brighter place. At events such as weddings, awards shows, and charity galas, as well as productions in theatre, television, film and live concerts, a Lighting Designer uses light to create all kinds of dramatic and subtle effects. More than just pointing a spotlight at someone, being great at this job takes an artful eye and a lot of hands-on experience.

Preparing and serving food is just the start of this fast-paced culinary arts career. You’ll need business management skills that include accounting and budgeting, as well as a head for planning and logistics, marketing and customer service. Most caterers specialize in a certain niche that showcases specific cooking skills, and their services can be needed for anything from a small awards banquet to an exclusive celebrity wedding. Selling your service is important, as is standing out from the crowd. Your success will be determined by how closely you pay attention to details and create an experience that surprises and delights your clients and their guests.

Event Planners make a living out of throwing parties. The best Event Planners possess a healthy balance of creativity and organizational skills. Clients will rely on you to produce memorable events, where everything goes off without a hitch. You’ll design the overall look of the event to reflect a theme or occasion. You’ll need strong diplomatic and communication skills as you deal with various vendors, including florists, caterers and performers, acting as a liaison between these professionals and your client. A great way to get hands-on training is by volunteering at charity and fundraiser events.

Sound Designers have the opportunity to work and become stars in music, film, television, advertising, live events, video games and even medical fields. You’ll create and refine sounds using everything from advanced digital equipment to the snap of your fingers next to a microphone. A Sound Designer’s job is to transform audio from something we hear to something we feel. From chirping birds to the giant explosions of an action film, anyone near a speaker will feel the impact of your expertise.

The way we use computers is determined by a Software Developer. You’ll create programs that improve the way people to use their phones, laptops and gaming consoles. You can focus on games, word processing and business applications, research tools, or operating systems for major corporations. The lives you affect will range from housewives to Fortune 500 CEO’s to rocket scientists. To excel, you’ll need to anticipate people’s needs to create applications and systems that instantly make sense to the everyday user. You’ll analyze their needs, then design, test, and develop the programs to make their lives more efficient, more productive or more entertaining.

Animators are the illusionists of the art world. You’ll manipulate two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) images to create the illusion of movement. It’s best to start with formal training in illustration, then concentrate your skills to develop cartoons, feature films, TV commercials or video games. You’ll work with writers, directors, editors, actors and computer programmers. You can collaborate with a team or work alone, depending on the project. After years of perfecting their craft, Animators can be responsible for bringing to life the next Bart Simpson, Buzz Lightyear, or Halo’s Master Chief.

Ever wonder how athletes make it look so easy? Excellent trainers. A Trainer’s office is either a gym, a stadium, or a state-of-the-art conditioning facility. You’ll push clients to their physical limits, motivating them to use muscles they never knew they had. The best Trainers do constant research to learn new ways to maximize their clients’ physical potential. If you work with a team, you’ll hit the road to keep them in top shape. In an injury situation, you’ll work with physical therapists and nutritionists to create a rehabilitation program. Behind every champion is a Trainer who helped get them there.

Sportscasters know sports, inside and out. With a talent for remembering sports statistics, a working knowledge of almost any sport on the planet, and an ability to weave it all together without ever saying “Umm,” a Sportscaster’s challenge is to make sports exciting and interesting for everyone. You’ll have locker room access. You’ll talk to players, coaches, owners and analysts. Many sportscasters conduct interviews and do research, using newspapers, blogs and even Twitter.
