Keeping your cool and having a level head are a big part of being an effective Corrections Officer. As an essential part of making the justice system work, you’re responsible for overseeing prisoners—those awaiting trial, or those serving time in a jail, reformatory or penitentiary. You’ll maintain security, monitor inmates, and ensure order by enforcing state and federal rules and regulations. Preventing disturbances, assaults and escapes can make this job dangerous. Aside from a correctional institution, you might also work as a bailiff (also known as a marshal or court officer), maintaining safety and order in the courtroom.
education requirements
Bachelor’s for federal and high level correctional employment, with completion of a training program in a prison
