New Proposal to Nationalize Education Standards

On Wednesday, a panel of educators released the proposal of a new set of academic standards for the K-12 grade levels part of the Common Core State Standards Initiative.

Many states, including Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Michigan, and North Carolina along with Washington D.C. are on track to adopt the standards. Last month, Kentucky became the first state to formally adopt.

Here’s a breakdown of proposal details, as outlined on the official website, corestandards.org:

• Aligned with college and work expectations
• Clear, understandable and consistent
• Include rigorous content and application of knowledge through high-order skills;
• Build upon strengths and lessons of current state standards;
• Informed by other top performing countries, so that all students are prepared to succeed in our global economy and society
• Evidence-based
