Reasons to Go to Summer School
Last updated April 18, 2022
Taking classes in the summer is a great way to accelerate your education and figure out a major/area of study that aligns best with your interests and goals. There are so many benefits of attending summer school - here are a few of them!
If you're unsure about an academic program.
Choosing a major in college is a big deal - it's important to be sure about what you want to study before you invest the time and money in it. Try taking a prerequisite class for the major you're interested in before you make a full commitment to switching majors. Interested in Nursing? Take Anatomy and Physiology. Interested in Civil Engineering? Take Physics. Interested in Journalism? Take Intro to Communications. Your advisor can help you figure out a course for your intended major program. This can save you time, money, and a headache down the road.
Take classes outside of your major program for your personal and professional growth.
Whether you want to dabble in painting, coding, or ballet, there are so many opportunities for you to broaden your horizons in school! Taking classes outside of your intended major is a great way to pursue your interests, try something new, pick up a new hobby, and maybe even make some new friends! One of the biggest benefits of taking these kinds of classes is that you can count the credits you've received toward your required elective credits needed to graduate.

Improve your GPA by retaking a class.
Took a class that you didn't do so well in the first time? Want to improve your overall GPA? Retake classes! There is absolutely no shame in re-taking a class - it shows that you have the commitment to succeed and learn about topics or concepts you weren't familiar with before. By re-taking these classes during the summer, you'll have them out of the way come Fall. That means you'll be able to focus better on the next set of classes you have that quarter or semester.

Get ahead in completing your degree by finishing required courses in the summer.
It's no secret that college is expensive. By getting required courses out of the way during the summer, you can cut down on time spent in school during Fall & Spring quarters/semesters. This can save you money on tuition and book fees in the long haul - and may even allow you to graduate early! You can start a class series early (such as math, science, etc) or take elective classes in summer school to get ahead.
