Taking College Classes in the Summer

Want to tackle required college courses before starting your first quarter or semester to save some time and money? Need some help easing into the college experience? Taking college classes during the summer can help you do both! There are many benefits to taking college classes early, but knowing where to take them and how to register/pay for them is key. Here's how to find and register for college classes during the summer.

Do your research

If you're looking to take college classes during the summer, you can usually do so at:

  • A local community college
  • A local four-year college/university
  • The college/university you plan to attend in the fall

Regardless of which option you choose, be sure to speak with admissions and academic counselors to figure out which classes would be best for you to take, and most importantly: if the credits from the classes will transfer to the college/university you will be starting in the fall. They can help you figure out which classes work with your schedule (especially if you have a job or any other important commitments), help you choose backup classes if the classes you want fill up quickly, and fill you in on the kind of workload that is typical in college classes.

Determine the fees & tuition

Visit the Financial Aid Office to discuss your financial status and what steps, if any, you need to take to receive financial aid in the summer. Ask about any grants or scholarships that are reserved for summer classes, and read our guide on  paying for summer school classes
